Coding for Young Entrepreneurs (14 to 17 years)

TIMELINE: 6 weeks (one hour per week)

REAL-WORLD PROJECT: A simple, one-page website for your own business or nonprofit idea

GOALS: In this class, students will::

  1. Demonstrate using HTML & CSS to construct a basic, one-page website
  2. Identify real-world applications for coding skills

DESCRIPTION: This online class is an introduction to social entrepreneurship and website development for teenagers (ages 14 to 17 years old). In this course, students will learn some of the basic concepts of HTML and CSS coding. By the end of class, each student will build a working webpage using HTML and CSS code. 

Course Location: This will be a 100% online course. All eLearning course materials will be located on our classroom learning management system, Teachable. 

Textbooks and required resources: None.

Prerequisites: Basic (elementary level) reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Computer and internet access.

COURSE STRUCTURE

This is a self-guided online course. Students are welcome to complete the course at their own pace, although at least one hour per week is recommended.

Videos: Each unit includes a brief (five-minute) video introduction or screencast.

Readings: Each unit includes some brief readings via Teachable.

Assignments: Each lesson includes scaffolded assignments on computer coding, website development, and socially-minded entrepreneurship.

Quizzes: At the end of each lesson, students will complete an open-book quiz, consisting of true/false, multiple-choice, or fill-in-the-blank questions or a survey.
